What to Check Before Hiring a Concrete Contractor in the Charlotte Area
November 4, 2026 Charlotte, NC
Concrete is one of the least forgiving things you can buy for your home. A driveway, patio, or walkway done right will serve you for decades — and one done wrong is expensive to tear out and redo. Most of the difference comes down to preparation you can't see once the pour is finished, which is exactly why the questions below matter.
Get the scope in writing, and look for specifics. The quote should spell out the thickness of the slab, how the base will be prepared and compacted, and whether reinforcement — rebar or wire mesh — is included and where. It should also say whether removing and disposing of your old concrete is part of the price. Vague quotes are where surprise charges are born.
Ask about drainage and slope. Concrete should be pitched so water runs away from your house and doesn't pool on the surface. A contractor who brings up drainage before you do is thinking about the job the right way. It's also worth asking how they'll handle the edges near your lawn, garage, and existing structures, since those transitions are where settling and cracking tend to show first.
Ask about control joints and curing. Control joints are the lines cut or tooled into the slab to guide where it cracks as it cures — every slab cracks, and joints decide whether it happens neatly or across the middle. Ask how long before you can walk and drive on it, and whether sealing is included or recommended. Be wary of anyone who can't explain their curing plan; rushing this stage weakens the finished product.
Talk timeline and weather, too. Concrete and bad weather don't mix, so ask what happens if rain is forecast on pour day — a company willing to reschedule rather than pour into a storm is protecting your money as well as their work. And ask about the warranty in plain terms: what does it cover, for how long, and does it include settling or cracking beyond the control joints?
Finally, ask to see recent local work. Many contractors will happily give you an address or two of driveways or patios they've poured nearby so you can drive by and look at the finish, the joints, and how the edges meet the street.
